New York City
Earlier this month I spent an amazing long weekend in New York City. I met up with my old teenage best friends for a girlie holiday. They live in Canada and I live in the UK, so we haven't all been together in 10 years! So, rather spur of the moment, we booked a trip together to catch up. The halfway point between us all was New York - so that's where we headed.
Nicole is omni, Kat is gluten-free and I'm veggie, so I pre-planned restaurants that we could all enjoy. New York has, of course, so much choice for eating. From kitsch restaurants with singing waiters at Times Square to trendy Lower East Side cafes with long queues, there are plenty of options.
We didn't have an itinerary, but just a list of great restaurants that we could try when we were in a particular area. I used MyMaps (free, Google), before we went, to plot all of our options since we weren't familiar with neighbourhoods. It worked well and whenever we were hungry we just checked the map to see what our choices were nearby. We also added bars, speakeasies and attractions to our map.
Here are some of the veggie/vegan restaurants that were on our list. We didn't make it to all of them, but the ones we did go to impressed us greatly.
My top 10 vegetarian restaurants in New York City
The Butcher's Daughter - 19 Kenmare St, New York, NY 10012 & 581 Hudson Street, New York.
Recommended by my friend Sus at RoughMeasures, this 'vegetable slaughterhouse' is a juice bar and cafe that creates healthy plant-based (mostly vegan) dishes. On the menu at the moment is cauliflower 'grits', matcha green tea pancakes, golden beet panzanella, and deli style Reuben sandwich with black pepper fennel 'pastrami'. It's open from breakfast to dinner - though I'd definitely recommend it for brunch.
Dizengoff - 75 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011
If you like hummus (and hey, what veggie doesn't?), then you'll love this place. This popular Israeli restaurant in Chelsea Market serves a choice of five types of hummus with pita pickles and Israeli salad. You might find varieties of hummus like Romanesco with tahini, raisins and almond, or perhaps romano bean with tomato, garlic and sumac. You can also try muhammara, shakshuka and more.
The Wild Son - 53 Little W 12th St, New York, NY 10014
This is a great spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They focus on healthy proteins, vegetables, greens and grains. There is some meat on the menu, so it's great if your party isn't just veggies. There are loads of veggie options including (at the moment) fried cauliflower sandwich with shishitos, frisee, pickled onion, cilantro and green yogurt; raw walnut pate; fried black rice with roasted vegetables and much more. In the evenings you can have veg-heavy food alongside a craft ale or cocktail.
Superiority Burger - 430 E 9th St, New York, NY 10009
This tiny vegetarian burger joint is very popular. The small burgers are inexpensive so you may want to get a few to share. If I was going there tomorrow, I'd definitely get the Superiority Burger (lentils, quinoa and black beans), plus the Sloppy Dave with frizzled onions and the famous burnt broccoli salad. All the food is vegetarian, and a lot of it is vegan. Closed Tuesdays. Grab your food and enjoy it in the park opposite.
By Chloe -185 Bleecker Street, New York, NY 10012
By Chloe is a counter-service restaurant on Bleeker Street (and other locations) and it is 100% vegan. Expect to find dishes such as sesame ginger soba; spicy Thai with apricot-sriracha glazed tempeh, almonds, quinoa, edamame, scallion, crsipy wontons and peanut dressing; whisky barbecue portobello mushroom burger and a selection of vegan pastries.
Dirt Candy - 86 Allen St, New York, NY 10002
"Anyone can cook a hamburger - leave the vegetables to the professionals." This Lower East Side vegetarian restaurant positively embraces vegetables. The menu includes intriguing dishes such as grilled and smoked broccoli dogs with broccoli kraut and mustard barbecue sauce, portobello mushroom mousse with sauteed asian pears, cherries and truffle toast and shanghai shoots with fermented black beans and crème fraîche. The brussels sprouts tacos are a popular choice!
Avant Garden - 130 E 7th St, New York, NY 10009
This trendy restaurant offers refined vegan fare. The restaurant prides itself on letting vegetables be vegetables and manipulating them with grains, herbs and spices in a way that means even non-vegans will never miss the meat. The menu currently includes scorched cauliflower with toasted garlic, fried capers and cauliflower puree, as well as celery root with shiitake veloute and mushroom gremolata.
We're confident that anyone who feels skeptical about vegan cuisine will experience a major shift in their convictions after one bite at Avant Garden, and we like to think that through this act of changing hearts and minds, we're helping to make the world a little bit of a better place, one beautiful dish at a time.
The Little Beet - multiple locations
We stopped at this small chain of healthy fast food a few times. You choose your base (mixed grains, rice etc...), protein (ponzu and ginger tofu, veggie pattie etc...) and warm and/or cold sides. The food is all delicious, healthy and inexpensive. You definitely leave with a spring in your step! The lovely staff even gave us some great tips of bars to head to in Greenwich Village after we ate. Most of the food is vegan and gluten-free.
Beyond Sushi - 229 E 14th St, New York, NY 10003
A 100% vegan sushi restaurant! Beyond Sushi is a buzzing spot that has reinvented sushi - with vegetables. A popular choice is the Mighty Mushroom with six-grain rice, enoki mushrooms, baked tofu, braised shiitake, and micro arugula, as well as the Chic Pea with black rice, roasted eggplant, artichoke, and English cucumber topped with saffron chickpea pureé and parsley.
In addition to sushi, they have noodle salads, soups, dumplings, rice paper wraps and desserts.
Blossom - 187 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011
This modern-vegan upscale organic restaurant is in an historic Chelsea townhouse - perfect for a special dining experience.
Dishes may include cashew cream ravioli with smoked tempeh, spinach, pine nuts, cremini mushrooms; soy bacon cheeseburger; tofu florentine or seitan scallopini with white wine, lemon-caper sauce, sautéed kale & truffle mashed potatoes.
