You will love the aromatic flavor of Cardamom Cold Brew Coffee! It's easy to make and tastes delicious.

An iced latte in front of brewed coffee.

Have you tried cold brew coffee yet? It's been a huge trend for a little while now and as a massive coffee fan I've been keen to try it out.

Cold brewing is nothing new. This trend originated in Japan hundreds of years ago, but is seeing a massive resurgence in popularity. There has been a lot of talk about cold brewing in America but until recently, cold brewers have been quite hard to get hold of in the UK. Now Oxo has brought it to the mass market.

So what is the difference to the usual hot method of making coffee? With cold brewing, the coffee grounds are steeped in cold water for 12 hours or overnight, which creates a concentrated coffee that can be stored in the fridge and then diluted using hot or cold water or milk. This method is gentle, which creates a less acidic and more aromatic taste. By reducing the coffee's bitterness, the true flavours of the coffee can shine through.

How do you make cold brew coffee?

  1. Let ground coffee steep in cold water overnight
  2. Add any desired flavourings (cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla etc...)
  3. Collect the concentrated liquid.
  4. Enjoy with your favourite milk

Oxo Cold Brew Coffee Maker

Oxo's new cold brew coffee maker makes it as straightforward as possible. The gadget, which packs away quite compactly, can sit on your countertop steeping overnight, then you flip the switch and it flows into the fabulously scientific looking beaker. You pop the lid on and store the beaker of coffee concentrate in the fridge and add a lid full to each cup of cold or hot coffee you want to make. Each brew makes about 13 drinks.

An exciting part of cold brewing coffee is that you can customise it with flavours! I added five crushed cardamom pods to this batch to give it a delicate aroma. You can add all sorts of flavourings - orange peels (great way to use up food waste before composting it!), cinnamon, vanilla pods, lavender, chocolate... so many options. You can also make cold brew tea - that's next on my list to explore.

Here's a brew in action:

How to use the Oxo Cold Brew Coffee Maker

1 - Add 284g of ground coffee (and optional flavourings)
2 - Pour in 1.2L of cold water
3 - Wait for 12-24 hours
4 - Flip the switch and release coffee concentrate into the beaker
5 - Store in the fridge
6 - Use coffee concentrate, topped up with hot or cold water or milk to a ratio of 1:3

The only confusing part is that if you are using freshly ground coffee, you just add a little water to start and the coffee will 'bloom' (bubble a bit). Wait for that to stop and then finish adding the rest of the water.

I'm absolutely obsessed with cardamom, it's my favourite spice (along with cinnamon) I usually add it to black tea and I use cardamom powder instead of whole pods for ease of use.

Oooh, I have to try cardamom with tea! I tend to grind my own as it doesn't take long and I find that pre-ground tends to lose the aroma. Perhaps you've found a better brand than I've tried!

I love the styling of the jug/beaker! Like something from a laboratory! I haven't drunk coffee for years but I do sometimes make a spiced coffee ice-cream - your cardamom infused coffee concentrate would be perfect for that!
