reader testimonials for gluten-free naan bread

    Why you'll love this recipe

Versatile -  you can use them as general flatbreads, for kebabs or falafel, or my halloumi souvlaki.

This is a yeast free bread, so it's very quick and easy!

Get the pan very hot for best results - you want the naan breads to cook quickly.

Make them in a frying pan or griddle pan.

Rather than going for authenticity, this naan bread recipe focuses on making the naan fast. In just 15 mins!

Just mix the four ingredients together, knead a few times, then roll out the dough and dry fry for a few minutes.

You could try adding in some flavourings, such as crushed garlic and chopped coriander to make them extra special.

Or brush with melted butter or oil and sprinkle with chilli flakes.

    Serving suggestions

This naan bread is perfect for mopping up your favourite curry.

I often make them alongside my favourite red lentil dahl.

These naan breads would be perfect with this healthy spinach and chickpea curry , Tofu Curry, Chickpea Curry, Bombay Aloo or even as a flatbread with my Spanish beans.

A pile of naan breads next to sprigs of thyme, scissors and cutting board.

    Ingredients

    Ingredients you will need:

Flour - use plain flour, all-purpose or gluten free flour.

Plain Yogurt - use Greek or any plain or dairy-free yogurt. Just not one with any flavorings.

Baking Powder - this gives the naan bread air and fluffiness. You can leave it out if using self-raising flour.

Salt - optional, but gives a little extra flavor.

    Tools you'll need:
    Mixing Bowl
Rolling pin - don't have one? Try using the side of a wine bottle.
Frying pan - one that can withstand a fairly high heat. Cast iron works great, but any other skillet or frying pan will work.

    Tips

You don't need to properly knead the dough, just bring it all together and knead a couple of times to do so.

Roll the dough out nice and thin. Trust me that they'll still get nice and fluffy when they cook.

To get the dough thin, be sure to flour the counter so they don't stick.

I usually roll out one naan while another is cooking. If you roll them all out first, then they could get warm and stick to the counter.

Get the pan very hot for best results - you want the naan breads to cook quickly

Make them in a frying pan or griddle pan.

You want a sticky, but manageable dough. If it's dry, add a little more yogurt, if it's too wet to roll, add a little flour. The amounts vary depending on brands and how thick the yogurt is.

    Storage tips

You can make this naan dough up to 3 days ahead. Just keep in the fridge until ready to roll and cook. I like to make a double batch and keep it in the fridge so I can use the dough as flatbreads for lunch or dinner over the next few days.

If you've cooked extra naan, you can keep it in the fridge for the next day. Just reheat in a frying pan or in the toaster. It makes them crispier and still delicious.

    Variations

Brush wet flavourings on the naan bread after, such as garlic-infused butter or herb/chilli oil

Add dry spices to the dough, such as cumin, garam masala, sumac etc...

Try brushed with oil and sprinkled with onion seeds.

Add chilli oil or oil and some dried chilli flakes for a bit of heat.

    Special diets

Make gluten-free naan: swap to your favourite gluten-free flour and adjust the amount as it might absorb the yogurt differently.

Make vegan naan: It's really easy to make vegan naan, just swap to dairy free yogurt, such as soy yogurt.

    Step by step tutorial

This naan recipe is sooo easy! Just follow these simple steps for perfect, fluffy, EASY naan.

    How to enjoy naan bread

Since these naan breads are so quick and tasty, you can use them for more than just alongside an Indian meal. They're fluffy and delicious yeast free flatbreads so have many uses:

These breads are perfect alongside a delicious curry - try my dahl recipe or Cauliflower Leaf Curry.

As a quick bread with dips (try my beet hummus)

As a flatbread filled with veggies.

It's great for packed lunches with cheese or other fillings.

Try it as an alternative to traditional bread in my vegan tuna mayo.

Serve it to dip into soup, like my quick kale soup, pea soup or tomato soup.

    Make easy garlic naan

Just melt a little butter with some crushed garlic and brush it on after cooking.

You could also add a little finely chopped coriander/cilantro.

    Equipment

    • mixing bowl
    • Frying pan

    Ingredients

    • 1 ½ cups (200g) all purpose flour (plain flour)
    • 1 cup (250g) plain yogurt (or dairy free vegan yogurt)
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder
    • ¼ teaspoon salt

    Instructions

    • Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. You’ll probably need to use your hands to bring it all together. Knead it for a minute or so in the bowl until it comes together in a fairly sticky ball. If necessary, add a little more flour to make it manageable.
    • Divide it into six equal pieces. Using a rolling pin dusted with flour, roll each one out onto a floured surface to about 6” diameter.
    • Heat a frying pan (without oil) until hot. Cook each flatbread for a few minutes on each side until lightly golden spots appear and it puffs up.
    • Best eaten on the same day. If making ahead, warm them up in the oven before serving.

I made this ma’am recipe tonight and it was fabulous! I will never buy it in the store again, it was super quick and easy and way cheaper to make it than to buy it in the store. It tasted way better than any of the store bought naans we have tried. My husband and I both loved it. I spread butter on one side and used crushed garlic. Thank you so much for sharing!

I never post anything online but this was exactly as described: quick, easy, made from simple ingredients and went down really well with adults and kids alike. Served with some homemade curries and the red lentil Dahl on the website, which was truly awesome and easy too! Great job and love your work. We’ll try more recipes. Thank you!

First time making naan, used Kefir because I didn't have plain yogurt. Needed a bit more flour but the dough was beautiful, the process very simple and they were just as you said, fluffy and delicious!
You are right I won't be buying store bought again, these are just too easy and too good not to make. Thank you for the great recipe!

Tried these for the first time and not bad BUT I used Stainless Steel pans and one burned kinda bad so I didn't put it on high/high for the rest of them and turned out okay. Are you using Stainless pans?

This was interesting. I tried three different naan recipes today, to get a feel for it. This was the only non-yeast option I tried. It made a surprisingly sticky dough- more of a batter texture. It was frustratingly goopy and I added another cup of flour.
I eventually got enough flour in it to stretch it out to naan shaped, and it ends up very fluffy. My partner really liked the tangy flavor- she thinks that the extra yogurt really adds something to it. She likened it to sourdough bread. I'm going to try to play around with the flour and try this recipe again. I liked not having to wait for the yeast dough to rise like the others I tried

Thank you for sharing this super simple recipe! I was quite disappointed at first because even though I followed the proportions I had a gloppy mess to begin with. I ended up having to add an additional cup of flour by the end to make it somewhat manageable. That said, I know flour differs in different places and the climate where I live may have played a part. Next time I will add the yogurt little by little until the dough comes together rather than combining all ingredients as the recipe calls for. Once the dough came together. It worked like a charm. I just had to flour my surface continuously to avoid from sticking. I tried adding 1/2 tsp. Garam Masala and that added some nice warm flavoring. We also tried a few with brushed garlic butter which was also quite tasty. I'm glad I stuck to it because it turned out well in the end but I would not combine all wet and dry ingredients at once although it seems to have worked for many. I will also try with a little more salt next time! Thanks again.

Love how quick and easy this recipe is. However, I think 2 tsp rising agent to 1 cup flour is way to much. The first batch I made, I followed the recipe and could taste the baking powder after cooking. I used just under 1 tsp baking powder on my second batch and they were perfect, same texture but no weird baking powder flavor. Next time, I will try adding just a little extra salt. Will make again and again!

Hi, yes that should work. If your sour cream is really thick, just thin it out by stirring in a tablespoon or two of water.

A very tasty naan, and as promised, easy to make. I used Greek yogurt. A little plain, which I expected since I just did the basic recipe, but I'll try the flavored options listed the tips next time. I served it with red lentil dal, and it was perfect.

Brilliant! So easy to make and genuinely fluffy and delicious. Far better than shop bought. I added some parsley and a bit of crushed garlic, than left them wrapped in foil on 120 for a bit longer (while sorting the city out) subtle but worked really well. Well definitely make this add-on, thank you for sharing. I'm planning to test out your other recipes next 😉

Hi, the Greek yogurt will work, you'll just have to adjust how much flour you use so you get a dough. The kefir may be too thin though, depends. If you have a thick kefir, then it's worth trying.

I just wanted to write and thank you!! I'm currently in Amman, Jordan where I work for an org supporting refugees, and the government imposed an official "lockdown" due to corona virus-enforced with police all stores shut down and no-one is allowed outside or will face arrest. They didn't give much of a warning so people have to make do with what they have in stock! Today is day 4 and we were told we will not be let out to restock, the government will only deliver water and some bread apparently later this week, who knows when the grocery stores will reopen!! Since i'm out most of the time for work I don't have many things but I did have the ingredients for these to go with the red lentil dhal I was able to make and store! SO happy these are saving me!!!! thank you so much, will definitely be looking to see more simple ingredient recipes to see how I can make my supplies last! stay safe everyone!

How do you figure this is gluten free and vegan? All purpose flour is not gluten free and yogurt is not vegan

No they aren't. That's why in the post I've given the gluten free and vegan alternatives for those with those diets. Gluten free flour/bp and dairy free yogurt.

I made these for the second time tonight. I’ve tried a few different recipes for naan, but we’ve decided we like this one best. I made ahead of time by pulsing the ingredient together in my food processor, then dividing the dough into 6 balls which I stored in the fridge until ready to use. I think this made the dough easier to work with and I got more bubbles than last time so I’ll do this again. Dry frying isn’t recommended for the type of no -stick pan I have, so I brushed a tiny bit of olive oil onto the pan. The balls of dough were patted out until very thin. Perfect! I love the idea of adding different flavours and using them for other things so will keep experimenting. And just a little thing that makes me love your recipe even more is it uses 250ml, a double batch 500ml, so no need to look around for other ways to use the remains of a 500ml container of yoghurt before it goes out of date (which regularly happens with me when a recipe just requires a small amount).

These look like they're AMAZING! I'm making them tomorrow for my 14 month old, she LOVES Naan. My question is can you freeze the dough before cooking it or is it better to make them then freeze? I know sometimes naan can get chewy. I'd like to avoid any extra chewiness if possible. Thanks! 🙂

Wow! My celiac girls also can not have dairy, eggs, corn, quinoa, oats, and a plethora of kther foods. This Naan recipe was amazing and so easy to come together! We used Daiya Greek style yogurt in Bob's Red Mill one to one flour. I did use extra flour because its pretty sticky stuff, but the results left my family and company asking for more. Thank you for sharing.

Made these on the spur of the moment one evening and couldn’t believe how easy they were. They bubbled and browned just like nann breads in store or from a restaurant do. I’m making them again tonight with vegan yoghurt and more salt. Can’t wait!

Can you use coconut flour as a direct substitute to plain flour?

        Hi Natalie
I've never tried it with coconut flour. If you do, you may need to adjust how much yogurt you use as it could be more or less absorbent than wheat flour. Just add 3/4 of the yogurt and add more or less as necessary to get the consistency in the photos. Let me know how it goes!

Coconut flour is VERY absorbent and has no bonding protein like gluten so you will need to add something to make it stick together or it will just crumble apart. You will need use much less flour and add something like flax, chia or xanthan gum to make it bread like. I can't tell you what works best as I tend to only use it in things I want to be crumbly and coconut flavored like coconut shortbread.

I don't usually leave comments / reviews but just wanted to thank you for the recipe. I make a lot of bread so I wasn't sure what to expect from just yoghurt and flour but these naans were AMAZING. The texture is a bit different (more soft and delicate) but not in a bad way, and they taste great. My boyfriend compared it to sourdough! I guess because of the sharpness of the yoghurt. These really can't be beaten in terms of how easy and quick they are to pull together. I'll be making them again for sure.

Hi! Just wondering if you think wholemeal spelt would work for these.. or spelt in general? Or does it need to be more 'normal' flour?

Hi, I haven't tested them with spelt. You might need to adjust the amount of yogurt you use to get the right consistency, but other than that it should work. Let me know how it goes!

This recipe is off the charts amazing! I was shocked at how close they taste in flavour and texture to restaurant naan - they have the chewiness that I love about naan bread. Very cool, and so quick and convenient. Like other commenters, I brushed them with butter and garlic, and I used my mix master with the dough hook so no hand kneading required.

No, this is not authentic and closer to roti/chapati plus baking powder but there's nothing wrong with that. Actually naan is easily the most overrated Indian bread outside of India. There are people in India that have never tried naan because there are too many other breads. Stick with this as actual naan is a pain and yields mixed results. If using gluten-free flour, do yourself a favor and use a boiling water mix. Roll it out with wax paper and peel off into the pan.
