Pinnable image for Chocolate Avocado Dip

Chocolate avocado dip may look decadent, but it's actually healthy! The avocado flavour fades away beneath the chocolate and gives this dip a thick and creamy consistency. It's perfect for dipping fruit skewers into.

I’m sure we all struggle sometimes to ensure that kids eat enough fruit and veg. My children are aged 5 and 7, so although they usually eat well, on some days all they might want is plain pasta or a peanut butter sandwich. Their growing bodies need all those carbs, but they also need their veggies. To me, the challenge is not to make them eat enough fruit and veg, but to make them want to eat it.

In a major report, scientists recently suggested that we should all be aiming for 10 portions of fruit and veg, rather than the current government guidelines of 5-a-day. Five is achievable, but 10? That’s perhaps a lot of produce, but it’s definitely a great amount to aim for. For adults, 10 portions is 800g, while for kids, each portion is roughly the amount they can fit into the palm of their hand.

Tricks to get 5-a-day

There are lots of tricks that I use, from always having a full fruit bowl and putting cut up fruit on the table at breakfast, to grating carrot into porridge. I also always put raw vegetables and hummus out at dinner, so even if the kids are only eating plain pasta, they will still reach for carrots and cucumbers.

Some suggest that it’s expensive to reach the 10 portions a day, but shopping seasonally, using local greengrocers and keeping an eye out for offers will cut the cost. Some tinned and dried fruit also counts towards the daily intake. I like to fill my freezer with inexpensive fruit and veggies so I can easily add extra veggies to meals and whiz up smoothies.

To me, promoting a love of healthy food means not hiding vegetables, but celebrating it and ensuring that it’s always on the table. Part of that is being creative. This fondue recipe might taste like a decadent chocolate pudding, but it’s mainly avocado. Dipping skewers of fresh fruit into it is fun for the kids, but it also means that dessert is filled with nutrients and goodness.

This dip takes just minutes to whiz up into a thick, dreamy chocolate dream. The avocado brings bulk, creaminess and it's goodness to the dip, but the flavour is masked by the cocoa and vanilla. You can't even taste the avocado!
