The texture of the cheese once cooked is crispy on the outside and warm and tender on the inside and can be used in many different ways.

Making a grilled halloumi sandwich is a great way to enjoy this cheese, especially when spread with an easy sriracha mayo.

It has a creamy spicy kick that's perfect with the soft cooked cheese.

Halloumi is versatile and can be paired with many different flavors including sweet and savory.

This popular Greek cheese takes a few minutes to cook on each side in a grill pan or frying pan.

You can use any type of bread or roll to make this sandwich.

It's a hearty and healthy classic vegetarian sandwich.

Ingredients And Tools

Halloumi Cheese: You can find this Greek cheese in the deli section of your grocery store near all the specialty cheeses. It is usually vacuum packed.

Sriracha: This classic hot sauce mixed with mayo is perfect to spread on any sandwich.

Mayo: Grab your favorite from the store or try making homemade Mayonnaise.

Sandwich Bread: Grab your favorite bread to make this sandwich. Or try a roll or bagel.

Lettuce, Tomato, Onion: Adds a great fresh veggie crunch and flavor.

Grill Pan: You can pan fry halloumi cheese or you can use a grill pan to get perfect grill marks.

Step By Step Tutorial

This is a super easy vegetarian sandwich recipe. Make it in just 15 minutes by following these simple steps.

Halloumi grilled in a pan.

Slice the halloumi into 8 thin slices.

Heat the oil in a frying pan or grill pan. When it’s hot, add the halloumi slices and cook each side for a few minutes until golden.

Tips

If you'd like to grill halloumi on your gas grill, oil the grates, turn to medium-high heat and grill about 2-3 minutes on each side or until haloumi is warmed through and has a crispy crust.

For an even more decadent sandwich, lightly toast your bread in a toaster oven or in your frying pan.

To make the outside of the cheese even more crispy, blot with paper towels before frying or grilling.

Swap out the tomato for chopped sun dried tomatoes or roasted red peppers.

Special Diets

Storage And Freezing

Halloumi cheese can be frozen up to 6 months. Make sure you place it in a sealed airtight container before freezing. Thaw in the fridge for 24 hours before using.

Once halloumi is grilled or fried, you can store it in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 5 days.

Although best when served immediately, grilled or fried halloumi is best reheated in the microwave at 10-15 second intervals. You could also reheat in a pan over low heat until warmed through.

FAQ

What If I Can't Find Halloumi? If you can't find halloumi at the grocery store, try these similar substitutes: Paneer, Queso Fresco, or Kasseri

Can You Eat Halloumi Cheese Raw? It can be eaten raw, but it has a completely different texture this way. Cooking it allows the moisture to lessen and makes the texture more versatile.
