Homemade Ranch Seasoning

It's so easy to make homemade ranch seasoning right at home!

I love using this dry ranch seasoning in many dishes for a burst of flavor.

This Hidden Valley Ranch copycat recipe is just like the real thing. Only made from scratch!

Ranch is one of my favorite flavor combinations. I absolutely love how the taste of the herbs mixes seamlessly with the tangy flavor of buttermilk.

While I love using dry ranch seasoning to flavor my foods, the storebought versions are not always the healthiest.

Depending on what type you purchase, they can contain preservatives and oils that are not so great.

My solution to this was to make a homemade ranch seasoning from scratch. Not only is it cost-effective, but it lasts for a while and you can customize it by balancing the herbs to showcase whatever you enjoy most. It also makes a great edible gift!

Sprinkle ranch seasoning on just about any savory food, or use it to make a homemade dressing or dip!

Be sure to check out some of my other homemade seasoning mixes, including Baharat, Old Bay Seasoning, or Vegan Chicken Seasoning.

You only need a few simple pantry ingredients to make this ranch seasoning mix!

  • Buttermilk Powder - Gives ranch seasoning its classic tangy flavor and creaminess.
  • Garlic & Onion Powder - Adds a mild garlic and onion flavor to the ranch seasoning.
  • Dried Herbs - A blend of dried parsley, dill, and chives gives the ranch seasoning a balanced blend of herb flavor.

Ranch seasoning ingredients in a bowl.

Assemble the ingredients: To a small bowl, add all of the ranch seasoning ingredients. Whisk everything together until fully combined and well distributed.

Whisked dry ranch seasoning.

Bottle and store: Using a funnel or a measuring cup with a spout, pour the blended ranch seasoning into a sealed container or airtight jar with a lid.

Top Tips

When choosing the spices, make sure they are not expired. Expired seasonings will not be potent and throw off the balance of ranch flavor.

When storing the ranch seasoning, store it in a cool and dry place away from any moisture as excess moisture can cause the buttermilk powder to stick together.

Add homemade ranch seasoning to a jar or container that has been fully sanitized to prevent any bacteria growth.

Serving Suggestions

There are so many ways you can use homemade ranch seasoning. Try these fun ideas below!

  • Ranch Dip - ¼ cup of ranch seasoning + 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (or sour cream) + 1 tablespoon buttermilk.
  • Creamy Ranch Dressing - ¼ cup ranch seasoning + 1 cup mayonnaise +½ cup buttermilk + 4 tablespoons sour cream.
  • Ranch Popcorn -1 tablespoon ranch seasoning  + 6 cups popped popcorn.
  • Garnish a batch of Air Fryer Potato Skins with ranch for a leveled-up appetizer.
  • Sprinkle on top of a piece of avocado toast for breakfast.
  • Stir into a hearty pot of Garlic Mashed Potatoes.
  • Make a ranch-flavored pizza.

Variations

Make a spicy ranch dressing mix by adding a pinch of cayenne pepper to the dry spice blend. Use as little or as much as you enjoy.

You can make this ranch seasoning without buttermilk powder if you prefer. It will not have the classic tangy taste, but the mix of herbs and seasonings will still provide a ranch flavor. You can also substitute buttermilk powder with plain milk powder.

The ingredients in this blend are completely customizable. You can use as little or as much of each as you prefer to make a ranch seasoning that is suited to your personal tastes.

Storage

Storing: To store your homemade ranch seasoning, add it to an airtight container or sealed jar with a lid and keep it in your pantry for up to 6 months.

Freezing: If you’d like to keep this seasoning fresh, you can vacuum seal it in a bag and freeze it for up to 1 year to keep it as fresh as possible.

FAQs

What spice gives ranch the main flavor?

There are many spices in ranch seasoning which all lend an equal amount of flavor to the ranch. In some ranch seasonings, you can taste dill overall.

Are ranch seasoning and ranch dressing the same?

Ranch seasoning is a dried powder that can be used to flavor foods while dressing HAS ranch seasoning in a creamy mix of oils to flavor it.

What can I use as a substitute for buttermilk powder?

If you don’t use buttermilk powder in your ranch seasoning, you can omit it completely. You’ll get the ranch flavor from the herbs but not the tangy flavor that the buttermilk supplies. Alternatively, substitute plain dried milk powder.
