Dish of dip with text: How to Make Halloween Black Cocoa Cheesecake Dip.
Dish of dip surrounded by sliced apples, pretzels and shortbread with title: Halloween Black Cocoa Cheesecake Dip.

Make this Halloween Black Cocoa Cheesecake Dip in just 10 minutes. Rich, creamy and wonderfully dark, it's an easy no-bake dessert for parties.

A wooden table with a bowl of halloween black cocoa cheesecake dip topped with candy eyes and surrounded by sliced apples, pretzels and shortbread.

I love a Halloween dessert that looks spooky and dramatic without requiring much effort. This black cocoa cheesecake dip is exactly that sort of recipe.

Unlike ordinary cocoa powder, black cocoa has been heavily alkalised, giving it a much darker appearance and is the distinctive flavour of Oreos.

Mixed with cream cheese, it creates a thick, almost charcoal-black dip that looks particularly striking. The flavour is chocolatey but not excessively sweet, with a slight tang from the cheese and enough vanilla to round everything out.

I prefer this dip thick enough to hold a swirl but soft enough that a strawberry or piece of shortbread can scoop through it without breaking. That's why I add the double cream gradually rather than pouring it all in at once.

Another thing worth knowing is that black cocoa behaves differently from regular cocoa. Its flavour is generally less sharp and less traditionally chocolatey, so the finished dip tastes like Oreo cheesecake!

For Halloween parties, I like arranging several different dippers around the bowl. The contrast between the dark cheesecake, green and red apple slices and colourful strawberries makes a simple platter look great.

Make it a Halloween feast and serve your Halloween Black Cocoa Cheesecake Dip alongside some Strawberry Halloween Monsters, Easy Halloween Bark, Naturally Green Halloween Cupcakes and Halloween Brownie Bite Eyeballs!

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Ready in 10 minutes. There's no oven, gelatine or setting time required, making it useful for last-minute Halloween plans.
  • Naturally dramatic colour. Black cocoa produces the dark appearance without needing black food colouring.
  • Easy to control the texture. Adding cream gradually lets you make the dip thicker for biscuits or softer for fruit.
  • Not overly sweet. Cream cheese balances the icing sugar, so the dip works with sweet and salty accompaniments.
  • Simple to prepare ahead. It keeps well in the fridge and only needs a quick stir before serving.
  • Flexible for different ages. Candy eyes make it playful for children, while a plain swirled finish looks suitably dark for an adult Halloween gathering.
  • No specialist equipment. A bowl, spoon or electric hand mixer and a few everyday ingredients are all you need.

Black Cocoa

Black cocoa powder is responsible for both the unusual colour and much of the flavour.

It's a heavily Dutch-processed cocoa powder, meaning it has been treated with alkali to reduce acidity. This produces a very dark powder with a relatively mellow, biscuit-like chocolate taste.

I recommend buying black cocoa specifically rather than substituting ordinary dark cocoa. Standard cocoa will still make a good cheesecake dip, but the colour will be brown rather than nearly black.

Sift the powder before mixing if it looks clumpy. Small lumps can be surprisingly stubborn once they become coated in cream cheese.

Black cocoa can also taste a little flat when used alone, which is why the vanilla and small pinch of salt are important. They give the chocolate flavour more depth without adding extra sweetness.

I get my black cocoa powder from Amazon or cake supply stores.

Be sure to also try using it in these striped Striped Beetlejuice Cookies!

Ingredients

  • Cream Cheese - Use full-fat cream cheese for a thick, creamy texture. Let it soften slightly before mixing to prevent lumps. Avoid whipped or low-fat varieties, which can make the dip too loose.
  • Powdered Sugar - Sweetens the dip without making it grainy. Sift before adding to remove any lumps and help it blend smoothly into the cream cheese.
  • Black Cocoa Powder - Gives the dip its dramatic dark colour and distinctive chocolate biscuit flavour. Choose pure black cocoa rather than sweetened cocoa mix. Regular Dutch-processed cocoa works as a substitute, although the dip won't be as dark. I get mine from Amazon or specialist baking stores.
  • Heavy Cream / Double Cream - Loosens the mixture and makes it smooth and scoopable. Add it gradually, as different brands of cream cheese can vary in consistency.
  • Vanilla Extract - Adds a gentle sweetness and rounds out the cocoa flavour. Pure vanilla extract works best, but vanilla bean paste is a good alternative.
  • Salt - Just a small pinch balances the sweetness and brings out the chocolate flavour. Fine sea salt blends in particularly well.
  • Candy Eyes - An optional Halloween decoration that makes the dark cheesecake dip look wonderfully spooky. Add them just before serving to prevent the sugar decorations from softening.

Beating the cream cheese.

1. Place the softened cream cheese in a medium mixing bowl and beat with an electric hand mixer until smooth and creamy. I find it's worth taking a little time over this because any lumps left at this stage become harder to remove once the other ingredients are added.

Icing sugar and black cocoa added to the beaten cream cheese.

2. Add the sifted icing sugar, black cocoa powder, vanilla extract and salt. Start mixing on a low speed to prevent the cocoa powder from escaping the bowl, then increase the speed slightly and beat until everything is evenly combined.

3. The mixture will look very dark and quite thick at this point, which is exactly what you want.

Double cream added to the cheesecake dip.

4. Gradually add the double cream, mixing between each addition until the dip reaches a thick but easily scoopable consistency. I usually stop and check the texture with a spoon rather than adding all the cream at once. It should hold soft swirls without being so firm that biscuits break when dipped.

5. Spoon the cheesecake mixture into a shallow serving bowl and use the back of a spoon to create a few generous swirls across the surface. Don't worry about making them too neat. The uneven ridges and shadows make the dark cocoa look even more dramatic.

6. Arrange the candy eyes over the surface, placing a few in pairs so they look as though they're peering out of the darkness. I prefer adding these just before serving because the sugar decorations can soften if left sitting on the dip for too long.

7. Serve with your favourite dippers, such as crisp apple wedges, strawberries, pretzels, marshmallows or shortbread. If you've prepared the dip ahead of time, let it sit at room temperature briefly to soften slightly before serving.

What to Serve With Black Cocoa Cheesecake Dip

I like serving this Halloween cheesecake dip with a mixture of fresh fruit, crunchy cookies and something salty. The creamy chocolate mixture is quite rich, so having a few lighter options alongside it makes a noticeable difference.

  • Granny Smith Apples - Their sharp flavour cuts through the richness of the cheesecake dip, while their crisp texture makes them ideal for scooping. Slice just before serving to prevent browning. I like alternating the green apples with bright red apples.
  • Fresh Strawberries - Their natural sweetness and slight acidity work beautifully with the dark cocoa. Choose firm strawberries and dry them thoroughly after washing.
  • Salted Pretzels - The combination of salty, crunchy pretzels and sweet cheesecake is particularly good. Sturdy pretzel twists work best because thinner ones can snap.
  • Shortbread Fingers - Buttery shortbread complements the Oreo flavour of black cocoa. Choose thick fingers that won't crumble too easily.
  • Marshmallows - Their soft, fluffy texture contrasts nicely with the thick cheesecake mixture.
  • Mini Pancakes - A fun option for a Halloween breakfast or brunch. Their soft texture works particularly well with a slightly thicker dip.
  • Waffle Fingers - Warm waffles provide a lovely contrast to the cool cheesecake mixture. Cut them into strips so they're easy to pick up and dip.
  • Chocolate Cookies - Ideal for anyone who prefers a more chocolatey dessert. Choose sturdy biscuits that can hold a generous scoop without breaking. Or try it with Halloween Oreo Brain Cookies!

Storage, Freezing and Making Ahead

Store the dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days, provided the ingredients are fresh and it has been kept chilled.

The mixture usually becomes firmer after refrigeration. Give it a gentle stir and leave it at room temperature for around 10 minutes before serving, rather than adding more cream straight away.

You can prepare it the day before a Halloween party. I recommend keeping the candy eyes separate until you're ready to put the bowl out.

Freezing isn't ideal. Cream cheese mixtures can separate after thawing, leaving a grainy or watery texture. Freshly made or refrigerated dip is noticeably smoother.

For meal prep or individual desserts, portion the mixture into small lidded containers and pack the dippers separately.

Keep the dip refrigerated until serving and avoid leaving it at room temperature for more than two hours.

Recipe tips

  • Use room-temperature cream cheese, not warm cream cheese. Slightly softened cheese mixes smoothly, while overly warm cheese can become too loose.
  • Sift both dry ingredients. Black cocoa can form compact lumps that are difficult to beat out of a thick mixture.
  • Add cream slowly. Different brands of cream cheese contain different amounts of moisture, so the final quantity can vary.
  • Taste before adding extra sugar. Black cocoa has a distinctive biscuit flavour that can be overwhelmed by excessive sweetness.
  • Choose a shallow serving bowl. It makes dipping easier and provides more surface area for the Halloween decorations.
  • Keep fruit dry. Water on freshly washed strawberries can thin the dip where they touch it.
  • Decorate just before serving. Candy eyes stay neater when they haven't been sitting on the cheesecake mixture for hours.

FAQs

What is black cocoa powder?

Black cocoa is cocoa powder that has been heavily alkalised. It has a very dark colour and a mild, Oreo-like flavour, making it particularly useful for Halloween desserts.

Can I use regular cocoa powder instead of black cocoa?

Yes. The dip will taste more like traditional chocolate cheesecake and will be brown rather than black. Dutch-processed cocoa is a closer flavour substitute.

Can I make Halloween cheesecake dip the night before?

Yes. Prepare the mixture, cover it and refrigerate overnight. Stir gently before serving and add the candy eyes at the last minute.
