Whip up a Halloween Chocolate Cream Soda with easy homemade chocolate syrup, fizzy soda, and whipped cream. Perfect for spooky celebrations!

A glass of Halloween chocolate cream soda, topped with whipped cream and candy eyes, with cream drizzling down the outside of the glass.

When Halloween rolls around, the excitement is often all about the costumes, candy, and creative treats.

One drink that fits right in with the spooky vibe is a Halloween Chocolate Cream Soda.

This fizzy, creamy beverage is a mix of black chocolate syrup, club soda (or Sprite for a sweeter touch), and cream, topped with whipped cream and candy eyes for a spooky twist.

It’s simple enough to make a big batch for a Halloween party!

The flavor? It’s like a carbonated hot chocolate that’s cool and refreshing instead of warm and cozy.

You get that rich, deep chocolate taste from the homemade black cocoa syrup, followed by the creamy richness of the whipped cream, with the soda adding a fun, fizzy texture.

The contrast between the dark syrup and light cream swirling together makes it visually striking, while the taste brings together the sweetness of soda and the bitterness of cocoa.

If you don't have black cocoa (it's the stuff Oreos are made from), then just go ahead and use any cocoa powder.

Making this Halloween Chocolate Cream Soda is straightforward and quick.

You just need to prepare a simple chocolate syrup in advance, which can be made in large batches and stored for weeks, ready to be whipped out for quick assembly.

This Halloween drink is perfect alongside a Ghost Halloween Smoothie, with a few Striped Beetlejuice Cookies and Strawberry Halloween Monsters!

This Halloween Chocolate Cream Soda combines elements of classic American soda fountain drinks with a playful Halloween twist.

The soda itself harkens back to old-fashioned cream sodas, while the addition of black cocoa and spooky candy eyes gives it a distinctly modern, festive vibe perfect for Halloween.

This recipe blends the fun and nostalgia of soda drinks with the rich, comforting flavor of chocolate—a delightful, whimsical treat fit for any Halloween celebration!

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Easy to Prepare: With only a few simple steps, you can have this Halloween-themed drink ready in minutes.
  • Minimal Ingredients: You likely have most of the ingredients at home—water, sugar, cocoa powder, and soda.
  • Customizable: You can adjust the sweetness or richness to your preference by swapping out soda types or adding more syrup or cream.
  • Perfect for Halloween: The dark color of the black cocoa makes it ideal for Halloween parties and gatherings.
  • Make-Ahead Friendly: The syrup stores well in the fridge for up to a month, making it easy to prep in advance for when the party starts.

Ingredients

For the chocolate syrup

  • Cocoa Powder: This gives the drink its dark, spooky color and rich chocolate flavor. I use black cocoa powder, but regular unsweetened cocoa powder works well too if you don't have black cocoa on hand.
  • Granulated Sugar: Provides sweetness and balances the bitterness of the cocoa. You could use a sugar alternative, but keep in mind this may change the consistency.
  • Water: The base of the simple syrup, helping to dissolve the sugar and cocoa. No substitutions necessary here!

To assemble the cream soda

  • Club Soda/Soda Water (or 7Up/Sprite): Soda gives a neutral fizz, while Sprite or 7Up adds sweetness. Choose based on your taste preference—less sweet with club soda, sweeter with Sprite or 7Up.
  • Heavy Cream (Double Cream): Adds a rich, creamy texture. You can substitute it with plant-based cream alternatives if needed.
  • Whipped Cream: For a light, fluffy topping that contrasts with the deep chocolate flavor.
  • Candy Eyes: A fun, festive garnish that adds a playful, spooky touch to the drink. Not essential but highly recommended for the Halloween theme!
  • Ice - to keep your halloween drink nice and chilled!

Instructions

Follow this step-by-step photo tutorial, then scroll down to the recipe card for the full ingredients list and method.

Cocoa powder and white sugar in a pot.

First, make the black chocolate simple syrup:
In a saucepan, whisk together the water, sugar, and cocoa powder until well combined in a pan over medium heat.

Simmering chocolate syrup.

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer for 10 minutes.

A spoonful coming out of a jar of dark chocolate syrup.

Remove the saucepan from heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature.

Once cooled, transfer the chocolate syrup to a clean, airtight container or bottle. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

For the Halloween chocolate cream soda:

Ice, club soda and chocolate syrup in a glass.

Fill a glass with ice and top up with club soda or Sprite.

Chocolate syrup stirred into the drink.

Stir in 1-2 tablespoons of the chocolate simple syrup.

Cream added to the glass.

Drizzle 1 tablespoon of cream into the glass.

Top with whipped cream and a few candy eyes for Halloween.

Variations

  • Dairy-Free Version: Swap out the heavy cream and whipped cream for coconut cream or a plant-based cream alternative.
  • Different Syrups: Try adding a hint of vanilla or hazelnut syrup to the chocolate syrup for extra flavor depth.
  • Less Sweet: Use tonic water or seltzer instead of Sprite or 7Up to cut down on the sweetness.
  • Boozy Option: For an adult version, a shot of spiced rum, Kahlúa or Baileys would make a nice treat.
  • Peppermint extract for a mint-chocolate twist.
  • Orange zest to complement the chocolate with a citrusy note.
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm, autumnal flavor.

Storage

The homemade chocolate syrup can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one month. It’s a versatile syrup you can also use in other recipes, like drizzling over ice cream or stirring into coffee.

Make-Ahead Information

You can make the chocolate syrup up to a month ahead and store it in the fridge. This allows for quick assembly when you’re ready to serve the drink. Just make sure to shake or stir the syrup before using it to ensure it’s well-mixed.

However, once assembled, the Halloween Chocolate Cream Soda is best enjoyed immediately, as the soda will lose its fizz if stored for too long. I don't recommend freezing the soda, but the syrup itself can be frozen in ice cube trays and thawed as needed.

Top tips

  • Make sure the syrup is completely cooled before storing it to avoid condensation and water dilution.
  • For a more intense chocolate flavor, use dark cocoa powder, but keep in mind it will also be more bitter.
  • If you’re serving a crowd, you can set up a DIY Halloween Chocolate Cream Soda bar with the syrup, sodas, creams, and toppings all laid out for guests to create their own drinks.
  • If you don’t have black cocoa, regular unsweetened cocoa works perfectly fine; it just won’t have that intense dark color, but will have a less bitter flavor.
