Mashed Celeriac is a tasty twist to regular mashed potatoes.

When added to mashed potatoes, celeriac will give the dish a hint of celery flavor along with a nutty taste.

This complements the creamy potatoes for a side dish that combines two great vegetables.

Serve the celeriac mash as a side dish alongside your main meal, on its own or with a healthy pour of your favorite gravy.

What is Celeriac?

Celeriac is an edible root vegetable that is the bulbous part of a species of the celery plant. It can be eaten raw or cooked.

Celeriac is available year-round, and stores well, but it's best when bought between September and April.

Also called Celery Root, it is not from the same species as the regular stem celery you buy, but is cultivated for the large edible roots.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

It's a great twist on mashed potatoes that has a great taste that changes things up a bit.

Celeriac is easy to cook and has a flavor that is delicate enough that it’s not overpowering but compliments the potatoes well.

It makes a wonderful side dish during the colder months because it’s creamy and comforting.

Add your favorite herbs and spices to the final product to customize this dish to your own tastes and preferences.

The entire side dish is made of 5 simple ingredients you can find at any grocery store.

  • Celeriac (aka Celery Root) - Find celeriac near the other root vegetables in your grocery store. It will look like a bumpy large turnip that has green tones. You’ll peel it then chop into pieces.
  • Peeled Potatoes - Potatoes give this dish its starch and density and help turn it into a filling side. It also helps to make the mash creamier and less of a celeriac puree. NOTE: you can omit the potatoes, it just won't be as creamy.
  • Fresh Garlic - Infuses this side dish with fresh garlic flavor.
  • Milk - Gives the dish its classic creamy taste and texture. You can swap to heavy cream (double cream) to make it even more creamy.
  • Butter - Adds a bit of texture and fresh buttery taste.
  • Salt & Pepper - Add these two to your personal tastes to help balance the flavors.

Step By Step Tutorial

Follow this step-by-step photo tutorial, then scroll down to the recipe card for the full ingredients list and method.

Chopping celery root.

Prepare the celeriac and potatoes by peeling them and chopping them into small ½ inch pieces.

Pot of celeriac and pot with potatoes included too.

Add the celeriac and garlic to a large pan of water, bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 mins, then add the potatoes and cook for a further 10-15 minutes or until the vegetables are soft and fork-tender.

Bowl of mashed celeriac and potatoes.

Drain well then mash with the milk and butter using a potato masher. Season with salt and pepper. Serve warm.

Tips

You can omit the potatoes, it just won't be as creamy.

You can use any potato for this recipe, but the best potatoes to use for mash are golden potatoes. They are naturally more buttery and soft on the inside which makes for a smoother mashed potato.

The outside peel of celery root is very rough and tough. You may need to use a sharp paring knife to remove the peel instead of a vegetable peeler.

The level of garlic flavor is in your control. You can choose to mash the cooked garlic into the potato celeriac mixture or remove the whole cloves before mashing.

If you want a really smooth mash,  cook the celeriac and potatoes separately. Puree the celeriac in a blender, and mash the potatoes separately, then stir them together.

Serving Suggestions

Add a heaping pile to your plate and pour Mushroom Gravy or Vegan Gravy over top for great flavor.

Use the celeriac mash to thicken up your favorite soup recipe without any corn starch or cream.

Variations

Make cheesy potatoes and celeriac by mixing in your favorite shredded cheese. Cheddar is perfect.

Crank up the heat by adding a pinch of cayenne to the finished dish.

Mash in some cooked carrots in place of half the potatoes for a vegetable mash.

For a chunky texture, add cooked vegetables to a bowl and use a stick blender and only blend it ⅔rds of the way.

Stir in your favorite herbs for a fresh kick of taste.

Add a pinch of truffle salt to your mashed celeriac for an even more elevated flavor profile.

Storage

Storing: Store cooled mashed celeriac in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days before reheating and serving.

Freezing: You can freeze mashed celery root in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months. When thawing overnight, it may lose some of its moisture. Add milk or vegetable stock to help thin it out.

FAQs

What’s the difference between celery and celeriac / celery root?

Celery is a long green stalk vegetable that grows on top of the soil. Celeriac is the bulb that grows underneath the ground from which the celery stems from.

Do I need to use potatoes in celeriac mash?

Since celeriac contains more water than potatoes, you will get more of a celeriac puree texture if just using celeriac. You can try blending with roasted or steamed cauliflower for more of a mashed texture with less calories.

Is celeriac a starchy vegetable?

Not technically even though it is a root. Celeriac is only 5-6% starch which is much lower than potatoes or pumpkin squash.

What does celeriac taste like?

Celeriac, the nobbly round root vegetable, has a mild celery flavour with a slightly nutty taste too.

What can I do with celeriac?

Celeriac is a versatile root vegetable. It can be mashed, pureed, added to soups and stews, roasted, or eaten raw. It's popular in France served raw in a creamy remoulade, similar to coleslaw.
