Serving tray of cauliflower wings with dip.

Cauliflower wings are a great vegan or vegetarian alternative to the classic appetizer. Trust me, they are SERIOUSLY tasty!

The baked cauliflower is coated in a tasty batter - so you get all the flavour, and none of the meat!

These veggie alternatives to chicken wings have a crispy coating with herbs and spices and are absolutely delicious.

The roasted cauliflower gets a dense, soft, and, dare I say, ‘meaty’ texture.

The shape is perfect for dipping into the cool, creamy, and herby dip.

Prep Ahead: You can make the cauliflower wings ahead of time, then pop them back into a hot oven for a few minutes to warm them through and get them crispy again.

Ingredients

Cauliflower - go for a nice fresh head, and cut it into bite sized florets - so they naturally have a sort of 'wing' shape.

Spices - garlic powder, thyme, basil, and paprika. If you don’t have the ones that I’ve suggested, then dig to the back of your cupboard and see which long-forgotten herbs and spices you can add to the mixture instead. While you’re there, rotate the oldest spices to the front so they can be used up!

Milk - Use your favourite vegan or regular milk.

Flour - plain all-purpose flour will help to make the crispy cauliflower wings batter.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

A tasty meat-free snack, party food or to take for a game day potluck.

The crispy batter is beautifully seasoned with lots of flavour.

These cauliflower wings are baked, not fried, so they're healthier.

The whole family will love them!

Serving Suggestions

I've served these baked wings with a simple garlic and herb dipping sauce. But they're good with so many other flavours too! Try them with these:

  • Homemade ketchup
  • Alabama White Sauce - this white bbq sauce packs a flavour BOMB! I love it.
  • Vegan Buffalo Cauliflower Dip
  • BBQ Sauce
  • Spinach and Artichoke Dip
  • French Onion Dip

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 head of cauliflower
  • ½ cup (120ml) milk or vegan milk
  • ½ cup (120ml) water
  • 1 cup (150g) all-purpose flour (plain flour)
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper

For the garlic and herb dip

  • ½ cup (100g) soft cream cheese or vegan version
  • ⅓ cup (75g) plain yogurt or vegan version
  • clove of garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme chopped
  • large squeeze of lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F/220°C and line 2 x baking sheets with baking parchment.
  • Cut the cauliflower into florets and set aside.
  • Mix all remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Dip each floret into the mix and coat well. Shake off the excess and place onto a baking tray. Repeat, taking care not to overcrowd the cauliflower on the baking tray and don’t pour any excess batter over the ‘wings’.
  • Bake for 15 minutes, then turn each floret and bake for a further 5-10 minutes or until crispy and golden.
  • Meanwhile, make the herb dip, by mixing all ingredients together until smooth.

Oooh delicious. Baked cauliflower is my new favourite thing. I have only tried with coconut oil and spices so I will have to give this method using flour a go.

I saw cauliflower used as a veggie alternative to chicken wings once, wish I could remember where, and thought it sounded weird but they were so good they were better than the actual chicken wings. HAVE TO try your recipe, it looks even better!

I love the colour on your cauliflower wings! It's been only recently I had my first cauliflower roast and really loved but I can imagine gorgeous crispy coating could bring it to another level. 🙂

Me and cauliflower don't get along and though this looks really delicious and really yummy I still need some meat or fish or eggs in the mix to enjoy.
