Make velvety Whipped Honey at home in minutes. This fluffy, light, airy, spreadable creamed honey is perfect on toast, in baking and beyond.

Whipped honey, also known as creamed honey or spun honey, is a velvety twist on traditional honey.

Its smooth, thick, spreadable texture and light, airy consistency make it a delicious alternative to regular runny honey. Plus, it's super easy to make in minutes.

Whether you're spreading it on toast, drizzling it over pancakes, or using it to sweeten your tea, whipped honey is incredible.

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through the simple steps to make whipped honey at home, and provide tips and variations to help you get the most out of this delicious treat.

The first time I tried whipped honey (also called creamed honey) was at a small farmer's market in a quaint little town. The vendor handed me a sample on a tiny spoon, and I was immediately hooked.

The honey was light, creamy, and had a delightful melt-in-your-mouth texture that I couldn't get enough of.

Since then, I’ve been obsessed with making my own whipped honey at home. It’s a surprisingly simple process, and the result is always a jar of deliciousness that my family and friends can’t get enough of.

What is Whipped Honey?

Whipped honey, also known as creamed honey or spun honey, is regular honey that has been processed to control crystallization, resulting in a smooth, spreadable texture.

Unlike regular honey, which can crystallize unevenly and become grainy, whipped honey has a fine, consistent texture that makes it perfect for spreading on toast or adding to recipes.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

Whip honey at home - it's not only easy but also incredibly rewarding. Here are a few reasons why you should give this recipe a try:

  1. You can experiment with different types of honey to create unique flavors and textures.
  2. The homemade version is free from preservatives and additives, unlike some store-bought versions.
  3. It's a 1-ingredient recipe.
  4. A jar of creamed honey makes a lovely homemade gift for friends and family.
  5. It’s perfect for spreading on toast, adding to desserts, or sweetening beverages.

Ingredients

Bottle of honey.
  • Honey: Raw, unpasteurized honey is best, as pasteurization can prevent the honey from crystallizing properly. However, I've made whipped honey from regular supermarket runny honey and it's worked out too.
NOTE: Most commercially available honey is pasteurized and processed. While it won't crystallize as readily as raw, you can still use it to make this recipe. Keep in mind that the final product may be smoother and less creamy compared to one made with raw honey.

How To Make Whipped Honey

Honey in a stand mixer.

Pour the honey into a clean, dry mixing bowl. You can use as much honey as you like, depending on how much whipped honey you want to make.

Partially whipped honey in a stand mixer.

Begin whipping the honey using a hand mixer or stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Whip the honey on low to medium speed for several minutes, until it becomes lighter in color and starts to thicken slightly.

Once the honey has thickened slightly, increase the speed of the mixer to medium-high and continue whipping. You may notice the honey starting to lighten in color and become more opaque.

Continue whipping the honey until it reaches your desired consistency. This may take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on factors such as the temperature of the honey and the speed of your mixer.

Variations

  1. Add a teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the honey before whipping for a warm, spicy flavor.
  2. Incorporate a teaspoon of vanilla extract to give your whipped honey a rich, aromatic depth.
  3. Add a tablespoon of finely grated lemon or orange zest for a refreshing, zesty twist.
  4. Infuse your honey with dried herbs like lavender or rosemary for a unique and fragrant flavor.

Serving Suggestions

  1. Spread on Toast: A classic use for this airy honey, perfect for breakfast or a snack.
  2. Drizzle over Pancakes or Waffles: Adds a touch of sweetness and a creamy texture.
  3. Sweeten Your Tea: Stir a spoonful into your tea for a natural sweetener with a smooth consistency.
  4. Pair with Cheese: This light creamy honey pairs beautifully with cheeses like brie, blue cheese, or goat cheese. Try it on this Goat Cheese Crostini.
  5. In Baking: Use it as a sweetener in your baking recipes for an added creamy texture. It's also great as a drizzle topping.
  6. Breakfast: Drizzle a little into a dish of yogurt and granola. It's great with Granola with Chocolate and Coconut.

Storage

Store: Store your whipped honey in a clean, airtight container. It can be kept at room temperature or in the refrigerator, depending on your preference. If you prefer a firmer texture, refrigeration is the way to go.

Top tips

  1. Clean Equipment: Ensure that your mixing bowl and whisk attachment are clean and dry to prevent any contamination.
  2. Patience is Key: Whipping honey can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. Be patient and keep whipping until you reach the desired consistency.
  3. Experiment with Different Honeys: Different types of honey can yield different flavors and textures. Don’t be afraid to try wildflower honey, clover honey, or other varieties.

FAQs

How should I store whipped honey, and how long does it last?

Store in a clean, airtight container. It can be kept at room temperature or in the refrigerator, depending on your preference. Whipped honey stored at room temperature will remain soft and spreadable, while refrigeration can give it a firmer texture. Properly stored, it can last for several months.

Can I add flavors to whipped honey, and what are some popular variations?

Absolutely! You can add various flavors to enhance its taste. Popular variations include adding ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, citrus zest, or dried herbs like lavender or rosemary. Simply mix the flavoring into the honey before or during the whipping process to create your desired flavored whipped honey.

How long does it take to whip honey, and what consistency should I look for?

The whipping process typically takes about 5 to 15 minutes, depending on factors like the temperature of the honey and the speed of your mixer. Start on low to medium speed until the honey begins to thicken and lighten in color, then increase to medium-high speed. The desired consistency is thick and creamy, with a lighter color and a smooth, spreadable texture.

It was so easy and I loved that it made the honey flavor a little less intense. So perfect on toast in the morning, but I'm sure I'll also use it on other things too. Loved it!

I had lots of honey, so when I saw this on your newsletter I had to try it. Took about 15 minutes (I used regular supermarket honey) and I then whipped in a little dash of pure vanilla extract. Seriously good!
