Try this refreshing and flavourful Berry Iced Tea, made with berry loose tea, ginger and berries. It's the perfect special drink for a hot summer's day.

A glass of berry iced tea with berries on the table and sprigs of mint.

Recipe commissioned by We Are Tea.

This berry iced tea is refreshing and bursting with flavour.

I've taken berry tea and added fresh ginger to give it a subtle deep flavour, then some crushed mint leaves for a fresh taste. The results are a delicious iced tea that's perfect on a hot summer's day.

To compliment the berries in the tea, I've added fresh berries to the glass. You can enjoy the drink, then tuck into the fruit. A bit like Pimm's! But I have another trick too. I like to make this and add frozen berries instead of ice cubes. They keep it cold and slowly melt, adding extra berry flavour.

Iced Tea

Iced tea is a great way to stay hydrated. I'm from Canada where it's much more commonly found, but it's great that the joys of iced tea are reaching the UK now. Funny as this is such a nation of tea drinkers!

You certainly don't need caffeinated black tea for it either. Instead, I've used a delicious loose leaf berry tea (bags will work too). You get the flavour of the fruit tea, but in a new format - on ice.

I remember finding it odd that my mum often drank hot tea on boiling summer afternoons. I preferred to reach for a flavoured iced tea, chilled in the fridge.

Peach, berry, mint - I loved them all. Now I enjoy making them at home as it's super-easy and nice to keep in the fridge. Be sure to try my Strawberry Iced Tea too!

Making it yourself means you can control the sugar, and each glass of this recipe only has 26 calories. It's healthier than cordial and definitely better than soda! Tastier too, with all the natural flavour of fruit.

Ingredients

You will need:
Berry tea - go for herbal, berry-infused green tea or black tea.
Lemon
Sugar (optional, or swap to stevia or honey)
Ginger - fresh ginger
Blueberries
Raspberries
Strawberries
Mint

This summery non-alcoholic drink would be great at a picnic or barbecue.

Serve it alongside a fruit salad, butter bean salad or carrot lentil hot dogs and get your five a day!

Berry Tea

I used Super Berry loose leaf tea for this drink recipe. I often get disappointed that fruity teas smell so good, but don't have a lot of flavour. Well, this one has loads! It's really tasty and is packed with berries, hibiscus, apple, orange and rosehips, so it's caffeine-free, and full of antioxidants, but also a really tasty drink.

You know how they say not to cook with a wine you wouldn't drink? Well the same goes for tea. A tasty berry tea will make this iced tea taste divine. This one from We Are Tea is a Great Taste Award winner so you know it will be delicious.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups (1 liter) water
  • 2 tablespoon sugar (optional) or honey or other sweetener
  • 1 inch piece of ginger (peeled and cut into five slices)
  • 3 tablespoons of loose berry tea (or 3 tea bags; I used We Are Tea Super Berry)
  • Juice of 1 lemon

To serve

  • 10 raspberries
  • 10 blueberries
  • 5 strawberries halved
  • 15 mint leaves
  • ½ a lemon thinly sliced
  • ice cubes

Instructions

  • Bring the water to a boil, add the sugar and ginger and stir until the sugar dissolves.
  • Remove from the heat, add the tea and allow to steep for 5 minutes.
  • Strain out the leaves and ginger over a bowl and allow the liquid to cool and stir in the lemon juice.
  • Taste for sweetness. If you’d like it sweeter, dissolve a little sugar in hot water and add to the tea. If you’d like it more tart, add a little more lemon juice.
  • Add the ice to a large jug or into glasses, along with the fruit and mint leaves lightly crushed to release their flavour. Pour in the cooled tea and serve chilled.

You have an annoying add covering the ingredients, with no X to remove.

I spent a lot of time in the southern US where iced tea is probably the most popular non-alcoholic drink. I never understood it cause I'm not really a fan of the flavor of tea in general. But since I've tried fruity varieties, I have to admit there is nothing tastier and more refreshing in hot weather! This sounds absolutely perfect.
