A Halloween tablescape, set with plastic crow and spiders, plus rows of mummy shaped pies.

Reasons to Make the Recipe:

  1. Spooky Delight: Halloween is all about fun, and these Mummy Hand Pies bring that spirit to life. They're a great addition to any Halloween-themed gathering or just for indulging in the holiday vibes.
  2. Quick and Easy: With just a handful of ingredients and a simple assembly process, these hand pies won't have you working like a mad scientist in the kitchen.
  3. Versatile Treat: While perfect for Halloween, these hand pies can be enjoyed year-round with a different twist in decoration.
  4. Kid-Friendly: Get your little ghouls and ghosts involved in the kitchen! This recipe is a great way to introduce kids to baking.

A Personal Anecdote: I remember making these Halloween Mummy Hand Pies with my family when I was a child. It was a yearly tradition, and we'd gather in the kitchen, each of us taking turns decorating our mummies with strips of pastry "bandages." It was messy, fun, and a great way to bond. Now, I make them with my own kids, continuing the tradition and creating cherished memories.

Ingredients

You only need 3 simple ingredients for these Halloween Mummy Pies, plus optional candy eyes!

Ingredients:

  • Puff Pastry: Puff pastry forms the delicious, flaky exterior of these hand pies. You can use ready-rolled sheets for convenience. If you're feeling adventurous, you can make your own puff pastry, but the store-bought version works perfectly.
  • Raspberry Jam: The sweet and tart raspberry jam adds a burst of fruity flavor. You can substitute it with any other berry jam or even apple sauce for a different twist. Or try using homemade raspberry compote.
  • Milk (or Vegan Milk): Milk or a non-dairy alternative like almond milk is used for brushing the pastry, giving it a beautiful golden finish.
  • Optional: Edible candy eyes make them extra spooky (and cute)

Step by step tutorial

It's really easy to make mummy hand pies.

With only 3 ingredients, you can quickly cut the pastry into shapes and turn them into quick and easy Halloween treats! Pop them in the oven and they puff up and get full of oozy jam 'blood'.

Cutting puff pastry into rectangles.

Cut one sheet into 6 equal-sized squares, then cut each square in half to make 12 rectangles.

Cut the other sheet of pastry into thin strips.

Adding jam to the pastry, then topping it with strips of pastry to look like mummys.

Spoon the raspberry jam onto the rectangles, avoiding the outer edge.

Unbaked mummy halloween pies, brushed with milk.

Add dough strips decoratively to look like mummies, and gently press the edges to seal.

Brush with the milk and bake for 20 minutes, or until golden. Serve warm or cold and decorate with edible eyes.

Variations:

  1. Chocolate Mummies: Instead of raspberry jam, use chocolate spread or Nutella for a gooey, chocolatey surprise inside your mummies.
  2. Savory Mummies: Experiment with savory fillings like pizza sauce and cheese for a spooky yet savory version.
  3. Mini Mummies: Make smaller, bite-sized hand pies for a cute and creepy appetizer.
  4. Fruit Frenzy: Try different fruit fillings like apple compote, apricot jam, or even lemon curd for a fruity twist.

Serving Suggestions

  • These hand pies are great on their own, but for a Halloween party, consider serving them with a side of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Storage

Storage Advice: If you somehow have leftovers (which is rare because they're so delicious), store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. If you want to keep them longer, pop them in the refrigerator for up to a week. To reheat, simply warm them in the oven for a few minutes.

Recipe Tips

  1. Keep It Cool: Work quickly when handling the puff pastry. It's easier to manage when it's still chilled.
  2. Seal the Edges: Ensure your mummies are securely sealed by pressing down on the edges with a fork. This prevents any delicious filling from oozing out during baking.
  3. Decorate Creatively: Get imaginative with your mummy designs. Some can have more "bandages" than others, and you can make their expressions spooky or silly.
  4. Chill the Pastry Strips: If the pastry strips become too soft to work with, pop them in the refrigerator for a few minutes to firm up.
