Turmeric Bread

This bright yellow turmeric bread is really easy to make, has a subtle earthy flavor and looks as good as it tastes!

You will love this golden bread, trust me. Not only for its incredible color, but also because it's a great way to get more healthy turmeric into your diet.

Just gaze at that loaf for another moment. It really is that bright yellow!

Ingredients for Turmeric Bread

You only need a few ingredients for this recipe!

  • Strong white bread flour
  • Salt
  • Fast action dried yeast
  • Olive oil
  • Ground turmeric

I've served this as Turmeric Toast with Spirulina-infused Mashed Avocado, for that you'll also need:

  • Avocado
  • Spirulina powder
  • Optional toppings such as dried chilli flakes, fresh herbs, garlic flakes and black sesame seeds.

Why you'll love turmeric bread

I've made this recipe many times over the past few years, and this time I tested it many times to get the right balance of maximum turmeric and the best flavour.
Thank me later. 🙂

All bread takes a little while to make, but it's sooooo easy. Trust me. You only need four ingredients and then to mix, knead, ignore and bake. Scroll down for the recipe and step by step instructions.

Serving Suggestions

We love this turmeric loaf dunked in soup (especially in my kale soup - for the colour contrast alone!), for sandwiches (it's great with my vegan tuna) and toasted in the morning.

My 7-year-old daughter declared it to be her favourite bread a few years ago so we enjoy it often in so many ways!

For this recipe, I've taken the classic avocado toast up a notch, and spread toasted slices of this turmeric bread with spirulina mashed avocado (recipe below) - so much healthy goodness!

Health Benefits of Turmeric

Look at that loaf - the hue shines through with every slice. Turmeric not only makes it yellow, but it brings it's well-known health benefits too.

TIP: always add some black pepper when you're using turmeric. Black pepper contains the compound piperine, which help absorption of the curcumin in turmeric.

Turmeric is hailed for helping a host of conditions: high cholesterol, hay fever, depression, gingivitis, premenstrual syndrome and even hangovers. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed to act as an antiviral, antibacterial and antiparasitic, and has long been used to help with diabetes, pain, rheumatism, osteoarthritis, memory and skin conditions like eczema.

Turmeric and Spirulina

For this recipe, I used Indigo Herbs' organic turmeric powder, which comes from premium quality organic turmeric roots that are ground down to a fine powder.

I mashed avocado with their organic spirulina powder for extra green goodness on top of the turmeric loaf.

It's a nutrient-dense, dark blue/green powder containing all of the essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals and omegas. It is especially rich in B vitamins and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

I love adding it to soups and smoothies for extra goodness.

Avocado toast needs great toppings, right?

I added a sprinkling of dried chilli flakes, fresh herbs, black sesame and some of Indigo Herbs' organic garlic flakes. They're derived from the finest quality garlic cloves.

These delicious large flakes are rich in the active ingredient "allicin" and can be used to imbue your favourite dishes with a subtle garlic flavour. I love these large dried slices of garlic. The bag smells incredible when you open it!

How to make Turmeric Bread

This bread really is easy! Follow this step by step tutorial.

  1. Mix the flour, turmeric, salt and yeast in a large bowl. Pour in 300ml lukewarm water and the oil.
  2. Stir to create a loose dough.
  3. Tip the dough onto a lightly floured work surface.
NOTE: the turmeric can stain, so if using a wooden or porous surface, line it with clingfilm/plastic wrap.

4. Knead for about 10 mins (or use a stand mixer with a dough hook) until smooth.
5. Form into a ball and place into a lightly oiled bowl, then cover with plastic wrap/clingfilm or a clean tea towel and leave to rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
NOTE: you can also leave it overnight to rise.
6. Knock back the dough by punching the air out and folding the dough over.

7. Form the dough into a ball and place onto a lightly oiled cookie sheet. Cover with a tea towel or plastic wrap and leave to rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
8. Preheat the oven to 430F / 220C. Lightly dust the bread with flour and cut a cross into the top. Place in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until it turns golden and if you knock the bottom it sounds hollow. Cool completely on a wire rack before cutting.

If you're making the spirulina-infused mashed avocado, simply mash the avocado flesh, then stir in the spirulina! It turns gloriously green.

Tips for making Turmeric Bread

  • Turmeric can stain, so don't knead it on a wooden or porous surface without lining it with plastic wrap (clingfilm) first.
  • Make sure the dough is really smooth when you knead it.
  • To make kneading easier, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
  • To check that the bread is done, knock on the bottom. Cooked bread sounds hollow.
  • The water can be cool or lukewarm - don't worry about the temperature as long as it's not really hot or really cold.

Thanks for checking out my recipe! I love hearing from my readers. You all allow me to do what I love and write this food blog. I love sharing vegetarian and vegan recipes with you all.

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • Cookie sheet
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 4 cups (500g) strong white bread flour plus extra for dusting
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 ¼ teaspoon (7g sachet) fast-action yeast
  • 3 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 ⅓ cups (300ml) tepid water

For the spirulina avocado (per serving)

  • ½ avocado mashed
  • ¼ teaspoon spirulina
  • toppings such as chilli flakes, seeds, herbs

Instructions

  • Stir the flour, turmeric, salt and yeast together in a large mixing bowl.
  • Make a well in the centre and add the olive oil and water (note: the water doesn't have to be a particular temperature - just tepid/lukewarm). Mix to form a loose dough.
  • Tip the dough onto a lightly floured counter (note: if your counter is wooden or porous, protect it from the turmeric staining with a piece of plastic wrap/clingfilm).
  • Knead the dough for 10 mins or until smooth. You can also do this in a stand mixer with a dough hook.
  • Place the dough into a lightly oiled mixing bowl and cover with a clean tea towel. Leave to rise on the counter for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Note: you can also place in the fridge overnight to slowly rise.
  • Lightly oil a baking tray or cookie sheet. Knock back the dough by punching the air out and folding the dough over itself. Form it into a ball, then place it on the cookie sheet for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Heat oven to 430F / 220C.
  • Dust the loaf with a little flour and cut a cross about in the top of the loaf.
  • Bake for 25-30 mins until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped underneath. Allow to cool on a wire rack before cutting.

To serve with spirulina avocado

  • Mash the avocado with the spirulina. Toast slices of the turmeric bread and spread with the avocado mixture. Top with desired toppings.

Notes

  • Turmeric can stain, so don't knead it on a wooden or porous surface without lining it with plastic wrap (clingfilm) first.
  • Make sure the dough is really smooth when you knead it.
  • To make kneading easier, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
  • To check that the bread is done, knock on the bottom. Cooked bread sounds hollow.
  • The water can be cool or lukewarm - don't worry about the temperature as long as it's not really hot or really cold.
