This Matcha Horchata is a refreshing, creamy, sweet vegan drink. It has a big, punchy flavour from the cinnamon and matcha green tea. A twist on the classic Latin American drink.

A glass of green matcha horchata.

    Horchata

Horchata is a traditional creamy cold drink that's popular in many different forms across Latin America and Spain.

Each country and region have their own method and flavours in horchata, though it's usually a blend of rice, nut or seed milk, with cinnamon.

An authentic Mexican horchata involves whizzing grains of rice in a blender, adding water and letting it soak overnight.

But for this recipe, I've taken a shortcut and used store-bought rice milk.

Horchata is perfect for warm days. A bit like a nice iced latte, a horchata is creamy, chilled and full of tasty flavor.

It's no wonder that so many street food sellers around South America sell cups of horchata.

    Why you'll love this recipe

    Horchata is comforting and refreshing.

Perfect on its own or with a spicy meal to balance the heat.

This drink is refreshing and creamy.

It's easy to make (cheat by using bought rice milk!).

It's a naturally dairy free drink, but it's still lovely and creamy.

Healthy matcha green tea adds extra goodness to a Horchata.

The spicy cinnamon works well with the faintly grassy matcha and the drink is rich and gently sweet.

    Horchata variations

Horchata is a traditional creamy cold drink that's popular in many different forms across Latin America and Spain.

Sometimes there are seeds, sometimes other flavors.

But the one thing that is constant is that it's a chilled rice-based drink.

This drink is perfect for any hot summer day, as well as for a Cinco de Mayo party!

What a gorgeous sounding drink! I tried this last year and really liked it, but I never gave up my coffee habit and the rest of it just went to waste in the fridge. Need to try matcha again and see if I can reduce my caffeine consumption!

Somehow I still haven't tried matcha!!! But I'm a fellow ex-coffee addict, and tea with big flavor is a great substitute. I need to try this!

I've never heard of this drink but it looks really good from the ingredients! I've been seeing matcha tea everywhere lately. I am a big tea drinker so I definitely want to try it. Especially if it may make me a bit more 'awake'.
