Trimming the greens off of strawberries.

Prepare the strawberries: Thoroughly wash the strawberries. Cut the tops off so they stand with the pointed tip facing up on a serving dish.

Color half the fondant black: Add a drop or two of black food coloring gel to half of the fondant icing and knead, adding more gel if necessary to make it black for the base of the mouth. Or buy black fondant.

Roll out the fondant: Lightly dust the work surface with icing sugar and roll the white and black fondant out separately until even and pliable.

Cutting oval mouths out of black fondant icing.

Cut the mouth shape: Cut ovals small enough to fit onto the strawberries out of the black fondant.

Cutting white triangle teeth out of fondant icing.

Cut the teeth: Cut small triangle ‘teeth’ out of the white fondant.

Adding fondant mouths to strawberries.

Secure the eyes and mouth: Use a little water on your finger to ‘glue’ the teeth to the black ovals. When they’re stuck together, glue the mouths to the strawberries with the writing icing.

Add writing icing to the back of the candy eyes and secure them on top of the mouth.

Decorating strawberries to look like monsters.

Top tips

When choosing strawberries, go for bright red, ripe berries. If they are on the larger side, that's even better!

To make black fondant, start with white fondant and add a drop or two of black food coloring gel. Knead it until it's evenly black throughout. Add as much as you need to for the desired color. You can also purchase black fondant icing from craft stores.

If you don't have decorating icing, you can use a little water to glue the eyes and mouth in place, or melted chocolate.

Use icing sugar to help roll out the fondant, this will prevent it from sticking to the surface or your rolling pin.

If you want to make these ahead of time, you can prepare the strawberries and store them in the fridge for 24 hours until you're ready to add the eyes and mouth.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these healthy treats along with these other Halloween party food recipes!

  • Halloween Brownie Bite Eyeballs
  • Green Halloween Cupcakes
  • Pita Haloween Mummy Pizza
  • Raspberry Halloween Mummy Pies
  • Halloween Bark

Variations

Use a different fruit: Try using apples, peaches, or even peeled oranges!

Change the eyes: Instead of candy eyes, try using chocolate chips or raisins.

Make them spooky: For a spookier version, try adding green food coloring gel to the white fondant to make it green. Then, use that fondant for the teeth and cut it into different shapes like jagged teeth or even fangs!

Add chocolate: If you want a sweeter treat, you can dip the strawberries in melted chocolate before adding the eyes and mouth.

Storage

These strawberry monsters are best served immediately as the fondant can start to soften if left out for too long. If you need to store them, put them in the fridge in an airtight container and eat within 24 hours.

Freezing is not recommended.
