    Why You'll Love This Recipe

Air-fried chickpeas are a healthy snack that contains a high amount of protein and fiber.

Because of the circulating dry heat of the air fryer, these chickpeas cook up in just 10 minutes or less.

You can flavor them in any way you enjoy with various seasonings and spices.

A great alternative to fried or sugary snacks like candy or french fries.

    Ingredients

    • Canned Chickpeas - To make this easy, purchase canned chickpeas that are already cooked. Make sure they are fully drained and rinsed in this air fryer recipe before using them.
    • Olive Oil - Coats the chickpeas in a light oil that will help form a crust on the outside, making them crispy.
    • Salt - Brings out the natural flavor in the chickpeas and helps enhance the texture.
    • Dried Seasoning - The endless possibilities regarding what you can spice your chickpeas with. We love using Old Bay Seasoning, Taco Seasoning, or Dill Seasoning.

Please see the recipe card below for quantities.

    Instructions

Wondering how to make this Air Fryer Chickpeas recipe? It's easy! Just follow this step-by-step photo tutorial. Then, scroll down for the recipe card for the full ingredients list and recipe method.

    Rinsing chickpeas.

Prepare the chickpeas: Drain the canning liquid from the chickpeas and rinse them really well. Place them all on a paper towel and pat them until completely dry.

Chickpeas in a bowl with seasoning.

Season the chickpeas: Add the dry chickpeas to a mixing bowl along with the salt, oil, and any other dried seasonings. Gently toss to coat.

Seasoned chickpeas in the air fryer.

Air fry chickpeas: Place the seasoned chickpeas into the bottom of the air fryer basket. Set the temperature to 400F/200C and the time for 8 minutes. Toss at the halfway point and cook for an additional 2-5 minutes, depending on how crispy you like them. Remove, let cool, and enjoy!

    Top tips

Ensure that all of the canning liquid is drained off the chickpeas to avoid them becoming slimy or mushy in the air fryer. The liquid is called aquafaba and you can use it in recipes!

The chickpeas need to be dried with a paper towel to ensure they get nice and crispy in the air fryer.

If you want to make a larger batch, cook them in batches so they have enough room to spread out in the air fryer basket. Otherwise, they will steam instead of getting crispy.

Because a crust forms on the outside, the chickpeas will be very hot on the inside. Let them cool for at least 10 minutes to release the heat and to ensure they crisp evenly.

The cooking time for chickpeas depends on your individual air fryer and how crispy you enjoy your chickpeas. Adjust the cooking time as necessary after checking.

If you want them extra crispy, just cook them a little longer!

    Serving Suggestions

Eat them as they are for a healthy snack and an alternative to nuts or potato chips.

Add a handful on top of creamy Lentil Soup for a satisfying crunch.

Use as a replacement for nuts or croutons in a soup or salad.

Enjoy as a snack along with Gorp Trail Mix for a hike or road trip.

Sprinkle some on top of a Mushroom Tart for extra crunch and garnish.

    Flavor Variations

These chickpeas can be seasoned in a variety of different ways. Try out the fun ideas below!

    • Old Bay Seasoning - a blend of celery seed, paprika, mustard, and more for a flavorful kick.
    • Taco Seasoning - use your favorite brand or make your own with chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, and more.
    • Shwarma Seasoning - a Middle Eastern blend of spices like cumin, coriander, garlic powder, and more.
    • Curry Powder - a blend of turmeric, cumin, coriander, and more for a flavorful Indian-inspired air fryer recipe.
    • Ranch Seasoning - a classic blend of onion, garlic, and herbs for a ranch flavor.
    • Rosemary Garlic - a classic seasoning blend that is perfect for air fryer chickpeas.
    • Cinnamon Sugar - a sweet and spicy combination that is perfect for a dessert air fryer recipe.
    • Chai Spice - a blend of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and more for a warm and cozy air fryer recipe.
    • Vegan Chicken Broth - give the chickpeas a comforting "chicken" soup flavor.

    Storage

Storing: These air fryer chickpeas are best fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

Freezing: Freezing is not recommended as the chickpeas will become mushy when thawed.

Reheating: If you prefer them warm or would like to crisp them up, reheat air fryer chickpeas in the air fryer at 400F/200C for a few minutes until warmed through. You can also reheat them in a conventional oven or toaster oven set to 400F/200C.

Table with a bowl of air fried chickpeas next to a dish of spices.
